                                                                                JUSTICE PREVAILS

The rich and the powerful get convicted too, in India. The conviction of vikas and Vishaql Yadav, son and nephew of UP politician and muscleman D.P. Yadav in the Nitish katara murder case shows the continuing trend in high- profile cases. This conviction reinforces the faith of ‘Aam Aadmi’ in judiciary system–being rich and influential doesn’t mean they can get away with just anything.
The outcry after the acquittal of all the accused, including vikas yadav, in the Jessica Lal murder case became a turning point in the history of Indian criminal justice system. It had , in some way or the other, affected the trial of other high profile case- Priyadarshini Mattoo rape and murder case, Shivani Bhatnagar murder case- being most talked about of all. Acquittal of all the accused after Jessica verdict came as a shock for otherwise dormant Indian public and these was a massive campaign launched against police sluggishness, shoddy trial and hostile witnesses. In all the cases where the guilty have been nailed, steely resolve from family and the civil society stood against all the odds to seek justice have been the key crusaders.
Media also played a significant role in keeping the presume on authorities to nail the guilty. And this led to formation of human chain against people who take riches and power for granted. Sometimes though media tends to over step its limit and pushes for results overnight like in Aarushi Talwar murder case in Noida however in a country where criminal justice system seemed to be a toy in the hands of those, in gallery of power, this kind of pressure does play an important role and leads to justice, as in many cases it has been proved.
After a similar campaign by Media and public, the CBI had brought out the appeal in the Mattoo case from a six-year-old cold storage. The high court fast tracked the hearing and awarded capital punishment to Santosh Singh, a practicing lawyers and son of a retied IPS officer.
“It seems the new criminal justice rules are being authored by Jessica Lal posthumously “summed up a lawyers and probably he was very right.

                                                                                                         Big O for America
In America, Fatigued by the Washington consensus and itching to break away from the Clinton   Bush duopoly overpower, Obama represents ‘Change’ and equal opportunity. The path of Democratic Candidature for the us presidency has been paved with merit and hard work by a 46-year old charismatic le leader. Bark Obama has ignited passion and excitement with in the younger Americans and that was the reason. Why he won a major patty nomination, color of skin notwithstanding and not many are astonished that such a large section  of  American population has cast centuries of prejudice aside and taken this unprecedented step.

Take a plunge inside and what comes in hand is the situation Americans never know before across the political spectrum there is an all pervasive feel that the this feeling can be traced back three decades to the onset of De-industrialization in the '70s as more and more industries and retail chains began to move or outsource their manufacturing operation to a head in the eight disastrous years of Bush-presidency.

That presidency is ending with America best by a banking-cum-financial mess that will take years. To untangle and threatened by a recession that several analysts predict will rival the ‘Great Depression’ of the 1930s. The value of the dollar is plummeting, its vast middle class is fighting a losing battle to maintain its real income, and the poor face growing impoverishment and increasing insecurity in their daily lives. It has lost more than 5ooo soldiers in a totally unnecessary war, is caught in a military quagmire in both Iraq and Afghanistan that it does not how to get out of and is certainly not winning the war was against terror. It was in dies need of breath of fresh air.

For the first time since WW2, Americans feel lost and longer trust their leaders. That is why a young one -teem ‘black’ senator has been able to come out of now here and in a sense 'steal' the primaries and probably the presidency from Hillary Clinton. Hillary relentlessly ‘Emphasized her experience’ and consensus-building capability-she therefore came to represent continuity in American politics when more and more Americans wanted a change of direction and red are cover of national purpose exactly what Obama is offering. Instead of getting a team of researchers to fell him what Americans want, he is shaping his electoral policy entirely from within himself and using his researchers to sound out

the reactions.

In his entire campaign, he has never ducked a difficult question, never pretended to be different things to different people. However, for India the news might not be good. For Indo-us nuclear deal is certainly leading towards fire from the frying pan. Obama has said with his with his characteristic bluntness, that ‘India’ has taken us to the cleaners; as a result, even if the Manmohan Singh government musters the resolve. To sing the safeguards agreement with the IAEA now, it is a safe bet that in the few months of bush administration that remain, no state department of facial will stick his/her neck out to the nuclear suppliers Group, much less exert American influence to make it lift the embargo on the supply of sensitive technology to India. Left won but India certain has lost, for we have thrown away a chance that will not come our way again for a longer time.

A big bang called Gurgaon

Till just a few years ago it was just another dusty village dotting the Haryana landscape. But a foray by a construction giant turned it into an address that is most sought after by the India Inc.
Welcome to Gurgaon. One of the newest Indian cities and perhaps the fastest growing corporate centre in the country. Gurgaon is a success story—an entire transformation from a once sleepy settlement into an insomniac face of urban modern India.

Now, the dusty, barren lands are no more to be found. Instead, as far as eyes go one can only see skyscrapers, industries and malls. Village chaupals have given way to restaurants and farms have turned into farmhouses. Now, Gurgaon has come to be everything that defines a Millennium City. The story of the city is a classic case of evolution of a dusty suburb into a BPO and IT hub- a perfect example of co-existence of two Indias- the old one which remains rooted in the tradition but is making a transition, a process which is often awkward and the one which is known for swanky corporate offices, malls stocked with world’s best luxury brands, pubs, discotheques, exotically named gated apartments, 24/7 BPO centers, liberated youth and stands at par with best cities of the world.

But it was not always like this. What really triggered the sudden, gigantic change?
Abhay Tiwari, a teacher at a business school says, “Some cities’ entire fate is defined by one central event. Gurgaon’s fate was decided the day DLF started buying land from farmers here for constructing buildings for residential and commercial purposes. The Delhi Development Act, 1946, paved the way.”

“The city has seen tremendous change during last decade. Availability of land at reasonable rates caught the attention of construction giants like DLF. Its location on Delhi-Jaipur national highway combined with proximity to the domestic and international airports served as icing on the cake.” Says Manul Batra who works for DLF.
As Gurgaon caught the attention of industry, construction and real estate majors, the fates of landowners here took a pleasant turn. Lands were bought for astronomical prices and those who till the other day tilled fields, were now owners of fleet of SUVs and sprawling bungalows.

Saurabh Verma, who works in a BPO unit here, has seen Gurgaon grow in the last decade. He pinpoints the city’s growth on its proximity to Delhi. “Being near to National Capital meant that a vast pool of competent manpower could shift here to work -- one of the reasons why Gurgaon emerged as a major outsourcing destination and real estate market,” Verma said. He puts the number of people working in call centers here at a ‘conservative’ two lakh.

With major names in the world economy making the city a hub for their corporate operations, it only led to more professionals shifting base to Gurgaon leading to real estate and retail sector boom.
A software engineer by profession, Taru, 25, says youngsters prefer to make a living here rather than in national capital or the Silicon Valet that Bangalore has become. “Home to multinationals such as GE, Microsoft, Sapient, IBM Daksh, Oracle, American Express, among a host of others, the city has a lot to offer,” she adds.

Retail sector too has come to be the sunrise industry for the city, which swears by its swanky malls—one of them, Ambi Mall being spread over one km area. “Increasing population with high disposable income and battalion of youngsters who love to hang around and indulge in shopping sprees, have propelled the growth in this sector. The living standard has gone up here. Shopping in malls is no more once an year luxury, it is now need and habit with the people here,” says Bhaumik Grover, owner of a cloth store at a popular mall here.

However, behind all the glitz and glamour, there lie stories detailing some unpleasant truth. Just scratch a little and complaints of infrastructure imbalance and law and order start pouring out.  Ankur, who made the city his home some 15 years ago, rues the government apathy towards this glitzy face of Global India. “Power cuts have become part of the life. Potable water is a myth here. And the air pollution here is ready to gift you all the ailments. The greenery is gone. All that you can see now is permanent cement haze in the sky, thanks to unplanned, fanatic construction. Its high time government should lay out long term planning for all-round development of the city,” Ankur said.
“Would you believe that this Millennium City does not have any means of public transport apart from cycle-rickshaws,” he said adding that the residents have filed a petition in the Supreme Court to save the city. Neeti Singh, a housewife, echoes Ankur’s sentiments. She plans to shift to Delhi so that her children could get better education. “There are hardly any good colleges in Gurgaon. Moreover, the soaring crime graph here has us living in perpetual fear,” Singh added.

Another reason for people moving out of this city is sky rocketing real estate prices. But then bravehearts still find a reason to live here. “Despite all its shortcomings, Gurgaon is the place where you feel you are moving in step with the changing, new, smart, zingy, global India. Truly ‘city perfect’ for the India Inc.” sums up Ruhi, a call centre executive.

INDIA ARRIVES AT WORLD SPORTS ARENA
When national anthem of India was being played at Beijing Olympics and tri-color hoisted high, even the most fastidious Indian would have felt a sudden surge of emotion in their heart. It was moment of pride, ecstasy and most of all- immense satisfaction.
When a contingent of 57 athletes, accompanied with 42 officials left for Beijing, all sports lovers had their hands on their hearts. We all knew, in a country of one billion plus strong population, its an unending saga of embarrassment at the world stage. Crave for the medals- is our destiny. For once Luck God smiled at us and India ended up putting its best performance ever at 2008 Olympics with one Gold and two Bronze medals. This performance was truly a reflection of India’s grassroots aspirations.
Significance of Gold was all the more  as no Indian before Abhinav Bindra had ever fetched an individual Gold. Abhinav Bindra, 25, from the northwestern city of Chandigarh, won a gold in the 10-meter air rifle competition. Vijender Kumar, 23, a bus driver's son from a village about 130 kilometers, or 80 miles, from here, won a bronze in boxing. And Sushil Kumar, 24, who learned to wrestle in the dirt on the outskirts and lived in a musty, mouse-infested room of Delhi, also won a bronze. But they all shared a common dream. Dream to put their heads high and to bring smiles on nervous fellow country-men. This new dares to dream and knows how to put opponents on ground, literally.

What is even more encouraging is that even others who missed medal, put some remarkable show. Like Akhil Kumar who defeated world champion in the Boxing Event, Jitender Kumar, again in boxing, Saina Nehwal stormed into Semis by defeating World Number 4 of the Women’s Badminton Event. They all are winners. It’s just not about making to the medal list but their hard work and dedication showed that they have the WILL to Achieve. And for the first time we saw other sports than cricket bring laurels to India.

The Whole Nation, Media, Government and Sports Authorities did not miss the opportunity of praising their heroes. Indian Government, State Governments started showering prize money in millions. Sporting Committee like BCCI also showered money like anything. However, this should not be the END. We need to bring these heroes in the news constantly. The Sports Ministry should allocate more funds for better infrastructure and facilities. It might be too early for us to say that Team can do very well in London Olympics, but at least we can have more team for Olympics to contend in many more areas. We lack good athletics, swimming and sailing sportsman. These areas should be targeted and world class trainers should be appointed to train them. Yes we can afford them now provided we are the fastest growing economy in the world. When we can afford to spend billions on 20-20 cricket, why not on other sports especially Olympic Sports! Special incentive should be announced for sportsman for Olympic based games. We are tried of hearing 1 billion-population country and only 1 gold. We want to convert into 10s and then 50s.
There is a whole lot of talent in the Indian villages. We need to tap, spot and develop these talents. Has anyone seen a village boy running or swimming in that wild river? Well I have and I can vouch that some run like the wind and swim like a mermaid. With a little training and grooming these children can perform wonders.
Social mobility is the key to a develop a great show at world stage- year after year.
